At the end of March ICAB received an instruction from a large Housing Association. Temporary accommodation was required for a family living in a property affected by severe damp and mould, and it was in need of urgent remediation.  The health risks linked to mould exposure range from allergies and irritations to more serious respiratory problems and is a very real issue facing many households across the UK.

Unlike emergencies such as fires or floods where hotel stays are often arranged immediately whilst damages are assessed, remediation works are typically scheduled in advance, which allows for time to find suitable accommodation. It was estimated that the works could take up to a month, so the housing team immediately began searching for a serviced apartment.

When receiving an instruction, it is very important that the claims handler establishes if there are any particular needs to be taken into consideration.  This family consisted of a mother and her two young children, who are both autistic. Ensuring a smooth and comfortable transition was a top priority so that disruption to their lives and particular needs was minimal.

Using ICAB’s extensive supplier network, two serviced apartments were quickly sourced. The mother chose the one nearest to the children’s school, ensuring their daily routine could continue uninterrupted.

The apartment was booked within three working days and the family moved in.  It offered everything they needed: free parking, weekly housekeeping, and even a garden where the children could play, providing a true ‘home from home’ experience during a challenging time.

By the end of April, the remediation work was complete. The family returned to a clean, safe, and mould-free home, grateful for the team’s care and attention that made their temporary move as smooth as possible.
